The History of the Order of the Arrow

Know this like you know your country!!!!!!!

                                                               Here's the story!

                                      Dr. E. Urner Goodman

The Order of the Arrow (OA) was founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915 at the Treasure Island Camp of the Philadelphia Council, Boy Scouts of America.  It became an official program experiment in 1922 and was approved as a part of the Scouting program in 1934.  In 1948, the OA, recognized as the BSA's national brotherhood of honor campers, became an official part of the Boy Scouts of America.

Membership

The OA has over 177,000 members located in lodges affiliated with 343 local BSA councils.
Eligibility
To become a member, a youth must be a registered Boy Scout or Varsity Scout and hold the First Class rank.  The youth must have experienced a minimum of 15 days and nights of Scout camping in a two year period (including a 6 day-night camping experience at an approved BSA long-term camp).  Scouts are elected to the Order by their fellow unit members, following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity Team Coach.

Ordeal Membership

The induction process, the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership.  During this period the member is expected to strengthen his involvement to the Unit and encourage Scout camping.
